What you need

  • MacApple silicon, macOS 26 or later
  • AI appClaude Desktop or the ChatGPT app for Mac, signed in
  • EditorDaVinci Resolve Studio 21.1 or later, to build timelines from the chat
  • FootageA folder of MOV or MP4 clips on the Mac, an external drive or a NAS
  • OptionalA Claude or OpenAI API key, for clip descriptions and moments
Step[01]

Install Prewatch

Mac App Store

  1. Get Prewatch from the Mac App Store. It runs on Macs with Apple silicon and macOS 26 or later.
  2. Start the free trial. 14-day free trial, then $59 a year or $7.99 a month.
  3. Open Prewatch.

You should seeA window with an empty library and an Add Folder… button.

Step[02]

Add a footage folder and turn on Watch and Index

Prewatch → File → Add Folder to Library… (⌘O)

  1. Choose File → Add Folder to Library… (⌘O) and pick a folder of footage: on the Mac, an external drive or a NAS. You can add several.
  2. Turn on Watch and Index for the folder, in the folder view or by right-clicking it in the sidebar. Until you do, Prewatch only reads the folder.
  3. Leave Prewatch open; it can be hidden. It indexes every clip and keeps up as new files arrive. A file that is still being copied is indexed once it stops changing.

Where the index goes. By default into the Prewatch folder inside your footage folder, so the index travels with the media to another drive, a NAS or another Mac. To keep it on this Mac instead, and use it while the drive is unplugged, choose Settings → Storage → Library on this Mac.

Speech. The first clip with speech downloads the Whisper speech model once (Large v3 Turbo, 1.6 GB, from huggingface.co). To fetch it now: Settings → Indexing → Download Now.

You should seeUnder the folder's name in the sidebar: Indexing on this Mac. Clips appear in the grid with their keyframes as each one finishes.

Step[03]

Connect Claude Desktop or the ChatGPT app

Prewatch → Settings (⌘,) → AI Apps

Claude Desktop

  1. Install Claude Desktop, sign in and open it once. Without it, Prewatch's Connect button opens the download page.
  2. In Prewatch, click Connect to Claude Desktop.
  3. macOS shows Claude's settings folder. Click Connect. You confirm it once.
  4. Quit Claude Desktop (⌘Q) and open it again.

ChatGPT app

  1. Install the ChatGPT app for Mac and sign in.
  2. In Prewatch, click Connect to ChatGPT.
  3. macOS shows the .codex settings folder, which the ChatGPT app, the Codex CLI and the IDE extension share. Click Connect. If there is no such folder yet, the panel opens your home folder: click Connect and Prewatch creates it.
  4. Quit the ChatGPT app and open it again.

Prewatch adds only its own entry and keeps the other servers in those settings. You never edit a configuration file by hand.

ChatGPT in a web browser can't reach apps on your Mac; the ChatGPT Mac app can. For Claude Code or the Codex CLI, use Copy Command on the same page and paste it into Terminal.

You should seeConnected, with a green check, next to Claude Desktop or next to ChatGPT app and Codex.

Step[04]

Turn on DaVinci Resolve Studio's MCP server

DaVinci Resolve Studio 21.1 or later

  1. Update to DaVinci Resolve Studio 21.1 or later. Trade press reports its MCP server as a Studio feature.
  2. Open Resolve's setup for AI assistants (reported under File → Setup AI Assistants; the Resolve 21.1 reference manual has a section on it) and add Resolve to Claude Desktop or to Codex in the ChatGPT app. Reports say the setup detects both.
  3. Quit and reopen Claude Desktop or the ChatGPT app.
  4. Keep Resolve open, with the project you want to cut in.

Prewatch never talks to Resolve. Your assistant uses both: Prewatch to find the material, Resolve's server to build the timeline. How the two fit together, with sources.

Free DaVinci Resolve or Final Cut Pro: you can still index your footage and ask Claude or ChatGPT about it, then place the clips yourself. A file handoff for both is planned.

You should seeIn a new chat, Resolve's tools are listed next to prewatch.

Optional[05]

turn on descriptions with your Claude or OpenAI key

Prewatch → Settings → Descriptions

  1. Turn on Describe clips with a vision model.
  2. Choose the Provider, Claude (Anthropic) or OpenAI (ChatGPT), and a Model.
  3. Create an API key in the Anthropic Console or on platform.openai.com. A Claude or ChatGPT subscription does not include API use; Anthropic or OpenAI bills it to your account.
  4. Paste the key, click Save to Keychain, then Test key. The test spends no tokens.

What it adds. A written description of each clip, moments with in and out points, shot roles and better translations. Without a key, transcripts, speakers, camera motion, quality flags, tags, days, scenes and search all work.

What it costs. The page shows what a typical clip costs with the model you chose. Once a key is saved, new clips are described as they are indexed, and clips already indexed in watched folders are described in the background, at most 200 per run (change it under Existing clips). Describe existing clips… shows the clip count, requests and estimated cost before you confirm.

What is sent. Each clip's contact sheet and keyframes as still images, and the text of a transcript in another language for its translation. Never video, audio, locations or speaker labels. The key stays in your Keychain and goes only to Anthropic or OpenAI.

You should seeA green check and A key is stored in your Keychain. After the test: The stored key works.

Step[06]

Ask your first question

Claude Desktop or the ChatGPT app

  1. Start a new chat. prewatch should be listed among the chat's tools or connectors, with Resolve beside it.
  2. Ask about your footage: “What happened on day 3?”, “Find the clips where we talk about the route.” or “Which clips are flagged as black or frozen?”
  3. When the app asks to use a Prewatch tool, allow it once or always.

You should seeAnswers with clip names and the seconds where things happen. In Prewatch, Settings → AI Apps → Troubleshooting counts each request.

Step[07]

Build a cut in Resolve

The same chat, with Resolve open

  1. Ask for an edit: “Make a string-out of day 1 in capture order” or “Cut a 60-second teaser from the best moments.”
  2. The assistant picks clips and in and out points with Prewatch, then imports and places them through Resolve's MCP server.
  3. Review the timeline in Resolve and keep refining in the same chat: “Swap the second shot for a wider one.”

You should seeA new timeline in the Resolve project you have open. Prewatch itself never changes your footage or your edit.

Troubleshooting

If something doesn't show up

Start in Settings → AI Apps. Its Troubleshooting section shows whether Prewatch's server is listening and how many requests your assistant has made.

What you seeWhat to do
Prewatch isn't listed in Claude or ChatGPTCheck that Settings → AI Apps says Connected. Then quit Claude Desktop or the ChatGPT app with ⌘Q (closing the window is not enough) and open it again.
“Connected to another copy of Prewatch”Prewatch moved since you connected it. Click Update Connection and restart the AI app.
“That is not Claude Desktop's folder”In the panel, choose the folder named Claude in Application Support, then click Connect.
The server line in Troubleshooting is redMake sure Prewatch is in your Applications folder, click Connect Again and restart the AI app.
Requests stays at “None yet”The assistant hasn't called Prewatch. Start a new chat, check that prewatch is turned on in its tools, and ask about a folder by name.
Answers miss some clipsAnswers cover the clips indexed so far. Check that the folder says Indexing on this Mac, not Read only, and ask again when indexing is done.
Clips have no transcriptThe speech model download may have been cancelled. Settings → Indexing → Download Now.
Descriptions or moments are missingDescriptions must be on and the key must pass Test key. Clips are described in runs of up to 200; failed clips are retried after 2, 10 and 30 minutes.
A clip is listed but not indexedRaw formats such as Blackmagic RAW and REDCODE are listed but not analyzed. MOV and MP4 (H.264, HEVC, ProRes) are.
Resolve's tools don't appearResolve must be running, and the MCP server is part of DaVinci Resolve Studio 21.1 or later. Check Resolve's AI assistant setup and restart the AI app.

What the assistant sees

Prewatch's answers become part of your Claude or ChatGPT conversation: clip names, times, transcript lines, descriptions, and a frame when the assistant asks to check one. Your video files stay on the Mac.
